Overview
The Hide Safari Camp is the product of our passion for nature in general, and Hwange National Park in particular.
The building of The Hide started in 1992 by the late Tom Preston, a charismatic and enterprising man who had a passion for wildlife and conservation. Situated on a private concession on the Eastern boundary of Hwange National Park and with stunning views across a natural waterhole, this was the perfect location to build a camp. In September 1992 after a hectic few weeks of final preparations and finishing touches, The Hide Safari Camp welcomed its very first guests. Sadly Tom passed away in November 1995 and did not have much time to enjoy this beautiful camp and the surrounding area. Despite his illness Tom and his wife Lorraine spent as much time as possible at The Hide prior to his death. The Preston family remain actively involved in the running of the camp to this day, fulfilling Tom’s vision of a family operated camp.
Over the years The Hide has earned its reputation as a consummate safari destination, for both the exceptional wildlife experience and the hospitality it offers.
Since The Hide Safari Camp was sited in one of Hwange National Park’s prime wildlife areas over twenty years ago, we have distilled the essence of the safari experience and embellished it with our own distinctive style. Hwange was once the royal hunting ground of Ndebele kings and has long been known for its abundant and diverse wildlife. In particular, the park is known for herds of elephant and buffalo numbering in the hundreds. This is one of the best places to see lion, leopard and African wild dog among the hundred or so other mammal and four hundred bird species. We understand that you come to Africa first and foremost to encounter the continents’ natural beauty. At The Hide we are passionate about nature; we have built on our superb location and extensive knowledge of the park with the best expert guides so that you can experience the true wilderness and wildlife Hwange has to offer. Whether on a drive to one of Hwange’s game-rich pans, on foot within our private concession or sleeping out in the Dove’s Nest, there is never a dull moment. In fact, the waterhole just metres from The Hide attracts such a variety of life that you may not need to roam far from your verandah to be part of the action.
